i just thought of the downside to a side hustle becoming a main hustle, no benefits.

to be honest, my main hustle is pretty sweet. i work at an art college (dope) with other artists (dope) surrounded by artwork and creative peoples (dope) in a green building heated by boiling water in copper pipes running under the floor and insulated by old jeans in the ceiling (dope) nestled in the design district of soma in san francisco that is riddled with good eats (dope).

i don't got a window, but this is kinda nice, right? my collection of lil homies is growing.

celery green walls, leaf green storage box, and hunter green rain boots. i dig the chair too.

an ikea pendant lamp i macgyver'd, mini-kitchen, computer, and a growing collection of postcard artwork inherited from friends and students.

some red and pink things, lavender too. i swear it doesn't feel like christmas in here. it just looks like it.

keeping it classy on the exercise ball. yup, i sit on a ball.

the best part is being surrounded by art and working with the students... and wearing jeans and a hoodie everyday. (the last picture was a total random occurrence of heels at work.) feeling kinda lucky. think i'll stay awhile.

been out the blog game for a minute now. guess it's a sign i'm on my hustle, right? i'm back to selling mushrooms, this time at the berkeley farmer's market. the mushroom lady is a trip. like most ajima (older korean women) she scolds me, hits me, and feeds me. goddamn, the woman can cook! if you come to the berkeley farmer's market, trust that this woman knows all your business. but she's the most generous and hardworking woman i know (besides my mom). i think i'm pretty lucky to have such beastly and independent women in my life.

still the best job i've ever had and the best part of my week. check it out!

came across this tutorial and fell in love. a fish plushie that turns into sushi! coolest thing ever, right? here is my first take.

there are definitely things that can make the process faster, easier, and cleaner.
1. use sew-on googly eyes, not paste-on
2. sew on fins and eyes to each side before sewing them together
3. sew the bottom circle of "rice" on last so that you can hide the final opening better

the only good thing about the holidays, in my experience, is the generous proportion sizes... oh yeah, that and being able to spend quality time with family and friends. the latter requires you have family and friends that actually want to spend quality time with you. (i see this going in a totally emo direction that is also characteristic of the holiday season and reinforced by such holiday favorites as "a charlie brown christmas" and "snoopy comes home." with that being said, i'm going to stop here.)

ok, in an effort to pull myself out of this emo-ness, i thought of another holiday positive... crafting! this year, i wasn't able to get my shit together in time for the cca holiday fair. BUT! i was able to put in some time working on crafts for halau 'o keikiali'i's annual holiday shopping event.

july was, well, magical. yeah, i said it. magical.

lots of travel and weddings this summer. i plan to write one giant post detailing the artsy fartsy design projects that accompanied the festivities. honestly, i'm too busy and too lazy. is that even possible, you ask ? uh, most definitely. for instance, i'm too busy to write this post but too lazy to do actual work.

this is the main deterrent in flexing my creative muscle(s) as well. however, last night, i finally attended dr. sketchy sf. it's been years since i've actually sat down and devoted longer than 5 minutes to drawing. my first few sketches were rough, very rough. but with the help of my friend steph from freeberkeley and a chimay red, we pushed through and came out with some satisfactory sketches by the end of the night.

hoping my skills will improve with more sessions, and these posts will show some kind of progress...

the fifa "la copa del mundo 2010" is upon us. so i painted the cafe la flore window in celebration with some help from the homies, the owner andy y la jenni! grab a cup of coffee and a game!

find the greatness within

my sister and i exist, thankfully, because of the procreative power of courvoisier. yeah, procreative, i made it up. (when you're conceived under the influence of a high quality cognac associated with rappers and old men, whose motto is "find the greatness within," you're allowed to make up words.)

i can count the number of times i've seen my parents drunk on one hand. sure, they drink. what parent of an eight-year-old announcing they're a lesbian at the dinner table or eighteen-year-old who uses cow's blood in a painting wouldn't drink? (for the record, those things aren't true. i am not a lesbian, and i only used like half a pint of cow's blood and mixed it with cornstarch. gees.) my dad drinks a few beers here and there, but a severe case of asian glow including but not limited to bulging veins and glossy bloodshot eyes acts as a successful deterrent. my mom, on the other hand, tells dirty jokes after her second glass of wine and pretty much passes out after the third. so you can imagine what might happen after a sip or two of courvoisier on a special occasion like father's day or a mutual birthday weekend. wait, don't imagine it. that's weird and kind of gross.

but it was on those magical evenings that my sister and i were conceived. and on this day, the tenth of march, we celebrate the birth of my sister, carli. happy twenty-ninth birthday sissy!

i wish i could say my sister and i have been inseparable since birth, but that would be a lie. my sister had the chicken pox when i was born. so we couldn't actually meet until i was two weeks old. and then we were inseparable... until high school. in between that time, i have fond memories of my sister and me holding hands, dressing up, and acting a fool.

and although we hit a rough patch somewhere between puberty and adulthood, i'm happy to say we are inseparable once again (if mostly through gchat, mobile phone, and spirit). i can't imagine my life without this amazingly compassionate and caring woman who has dedicated her life to serving others.

most recently, she has proven herself to be an incredible mother. and later this year, she will become a wife. not a wifey, a wife. hella grown. so please forgive the lighthearted post with little detail about one of the most important females in my life, but i'm saving the tear-jerkers for my maid-of-honor speech. (yup, i'm gonna present you with a beautiful poem about pennies falling from heaven and make you cry!)

all this to say i'm thankful for my parents and courvoisier for creating one of the people most influential in "find(ing) the greatness within" myself.

so here it is, my attempt to make princess stuff that's not too princess-y.

the sketches were good, i thought, princess inspired aprons for cooking with bubbie.

the finished products came out okay, considering these are sewing pojects #5 and #6. i learned some very important things:

1) do not wait until the last minute. my mom can do that, but she's been sewing for over 50 years.

2) refer to the sketch more often. i completely forgot the pockets and scalloped edges. (was the "law and order: svu" marathon too distracting?)

3) maybe patterns are the way to go. (note to self: learn how to use them.)

4) no matter what! think good thoughts, make with aloha, and things will turn out beautifully. my mom taught me that one!

my sweet sweet words to steph, as we slaved away in the shop last night. two little asian girls, in a dimly lit room covered in art, hunched over sewing machines 'til the wee hours of the morning. i'm sure folks passing by were curious and appalled, save that one guy who thought i was doing the robot and came around a second time to check out my super cool moves.

it was a hipster sweat shop. arthur was feeling under the weather and running around like a madman, as usual, saying inappropriate things, as usual. dixon provided comic relief, with a clip to hold back his luscious locks, as he pondered the idea of taking his relationship with arthur to the next level. derek came through after work to offer moral support and was immediately badgered to whip it out, his camera that is. all the while, steph and i grubbed like the beasts we are and deconstructed leftover t-shirts from the 90s, maybe even the 80s, and attempted to transform them into something lovely.

steph worked on a dope ass cowl neck/hoodie dress out of two t-shirts. (pics of that to be posted soon i hope! *ahem. steph. hint hint*

i took six shirts and made a hoodie scarf.

pretty sweet, right? i've been wanting one of these forever. and now i've finally made it! (this isn't the prettiest picture, but it was like 2:30am. my bad.)

happy new year everyone!

here are the results of my tote decorating endeavor:

i "borrowed" the doily-stencil idea from a fellow blogger. it was super simple, and i made ten in less than half an hour. you can't beat that kind of speed and efficiency, and they came out pretty well. i think the light colored ink on the black bag works best.

i used water-based silkscreening ink, but any fabric paint or acrylic will work. remember to run over the completed image with a hot iron to set the ink. the bags cost me $5.99 each, but you can get them for less if you wait for a sale and stock up. i will most definitely be keeping a bunch handy for those last minute gifts. they work great as gift bags too!

the following bag is by far my favorite. i used the material from a jacket acquired at a clothing swap to make my friend a giraffe-in-love tote. i used hot pink thread in a decorative zig zag pattern. it is by no means perfect, and definitely looks handmade. however, i think the amateurish execution only adds to the charm. it's definitely my favorite, and i will be making more in the future!

i've got big plans for this new year. and as it was written in a drunken text i received late last night, i plan to "win in 2010 :)"

canvas tote bags are the new ties/sweatshirts/keds of the 80s and 90s.

back in the day, my sister and i used to craft hardcore. this translated into homemade xmas gifts for my parents. these were the kind of gifts that no person in their right mind would ever want or wear, UNLESS it was made by the person/people you yourself made. i'm talking about almost anything covered in glittery puff paint, hand prints, and googley eyes.

this year, in the spirit of crafting, handmade goods, and being green, folks i know will be receiving canvas tote bags that i will personally embellish. come on! everyone needs a canvas tote bag! you should make them for your friends and family, too. send me pics, and i'll post them!

friday night freeberkeley held it's 4th free event at fantasy t-shirts.

beer. wine. art. tees. beats. laughs. friends. it was "good times."

(i would have posted pictures if i didn't look like such a mess in them. haha.)

saturday was the cca holiday craft fair. i did better than expected, but then again, i wasn't expecting a whole lot. freeberkeley tees, on the other hand, cleaned up. go head, dixon, with your poop humor and stick figures. your shirts were definitely the top sellers of the day!

although i sold some things, i bought a few too. meh. it was all in the spirit of supporting other folks in their side hustles. so it was money well spent. looking forward to spring fair 2010!

and i'm totally lagging. here's what i would like to contribute to this year's holiday fair:

i consider myself an artistic person and not an artist. man, that hurt to say out loud. i think some people just have the passion and the drive to create art all day everyday. i don't feel that way, and it sort of makes me want to cry. i know i'm creative and capable of expressing myself visually, but i just don't have the initiative or discipline to practice my craft on the daily.

every night when i was little (actually, up until i moved away to college) my dad would say, "sweet dreams. roses on your...." and my sister and i would say, "pillow." he would hug us tightly, tickle and kiss us until we cried. okay, i usually was the one who'd cry and not because i was laughing but because i was a baby. anyways, i know this is a bit late... but i love him all the same. so happy birthday, pops!

october 10, 1947, my dad was born. the source of my “chung” gene, he was a hustler from day one.

i picture him in a t-shirt, jeans, and cowboy boots. his hair slicked and parted on one-side. his ears perked and smile endearingly mischievous. what can i say? the man can dress!

as the last of six kids growing up in south central la, my dad was living the life his parents had hustled so hard to create. they had a color tv, yo! that was big thangs back then. when he wanted something, he made it happen. he once took apart brand new skates and nailed some scrap wood together with an orange crate to make a scooter. he wanted a car when he was in high school. so he sold snap-on-tools door-to-door and cruised in the company truck. and he joined the church choir to meet girls, only to be told to hum and eventually just to lip-synch. what a ladies’ man? but what my dad lacks in singing skills he makes up for in business savvy.

he’s definitely a charmer and knows how to treat his customers. he’s polite and gracious. and he’s got great instincts. sometimes i wish he’d just quit his job and take a chance on a hustle of his own. i think he wishes the same but feels like it’s too late or too risky. so although, he doesn’t really understand where i’m coming from all the time he encourages me to explore things that interest me and take chances on the unknown. but most importantly, he trusts me to make my own decisions and supports me whether things take off or fall apart.

he’s got a smile that melts, a laugh that’s contagious, and the ability to calm and comfort me when no one else can. if only he’d let me get another tattoo…

october 9, 1948, my mom was born. if she were to have any interest in money, this woman would be the most successful hustler i know.

this is going to sound cheesy, but it ain't nothing but the truth. MY MOM IS THE SHIT!

i think almost everyone that has met my mom can attest to this fact. the woman can dance. she can sing. she plays the ukulele. and she knows the lyrics to rappin' 4-tay's "players club". she grew up climbing coconut trees and swimming with sharks. she put herself through college playing poker. she still hustles every friday playing cards, saturday playing golf, and here and there playing mahjong. the woman plays fantasy football for godsakes! and she's constantly on the computer checking on her team! she is the definition of strength, discipline, and pride. without her, i would be nothing... literally.

as the last of sixteen children, she mended hand-me-downs and sewed her own clothes. as a mother, she made halloween costumes, hula costumes, and prom dresses. friends would stay over to find their safety-pinned skirts hemmed and pressed with perfect pleats. i would wake up to find new jeans embellished with dope patches where holes used to be (yes, i bought new jeans with holes), and they never looked better. just two weeks ago she was up until 5am sewing and resewing a dress for my sister. that's devotion, love, aloha... kahiau.

so, in her honor, i bought myself a present. i know, a terrible daughter buying herself a gift instead of her mother for her mother's birthday, right? i bought a sewing machine. currently, i know very little about sewing. but with some practice, i'm sure i'll be able to sew halloween costumes, hula costumes, and prom dresses for my own children. like my mom always says,

my dad says i have the "chung" gene, meaning i'm a hustler at heart. beginning with my yet yet back in the late 1910s, my family has hustled pre-washed produce, various properties around la, a chinese restaurant, even a stationary store. hey, man, getting stuff personalized with your name in puffy paint and paint pen was the shit in the 90s!

i've had my fair share of hustles too: babysitting, "personally assisting", waiting tables for tips, selling mushrooms at the farmer's market, installing floor treatments, printing baby clothes, hand-painting shoes.... i mean, goddamn, my gig now is the first legit job i've had in over a year and a half. and let me tell you, i'm over it. ok, i didn't mean that. i feel lucky to be employed, especially these days with the economy the way it is and blah, blah, blah... something about paying rent and eating. but i'm looking for that perfect side hustle.

the perfect side hustle is a service you provide or a product you make that somehow leads to you getting paid. ideally, it doens't take too much effort because it's your passion or your hobby and you do it anyways. so it doesn't interfere with your day job. hopefully, word spreads and you end up on oprah's list of favorites. and just like that you're sipping cocktails on the beach.

i realize this is a fantasy, and there is much more work involved. but i'm down if it means being my own boss. seriously, if the fool who thought up selling .gifs of gifts for real money on facebook is getting paid why can't i?
